Traffic Light Could Signal Walgreen's
By TIM CHANDLER

Roxboro City Council followed the lead of Person County commissioners
Tuesday night by adopting a formal resolution calling on the State
Department of Transportation (DOT) to install a traffic signal on Madison
Boulevard at its intersection with Clayton Avenue, a move that could help
bring a new drugstore chain to Roxboro.
The traffic signal, if approved by DOT, could also result in an economic
development gain for Roxboro, according to City Manager Jon Barlow.
"We were requested to adopt the resolution, the same as the county did,
for the purpose of safety at that intersection and probably, more
importantly, for economic development," Barlow said. "Walgreen's has said
they would like to come to town and locate at that lot at the
intersection," he said, referring to the pharmacy chain.
Barlow said the adopted resolution will be forwarded to state Rep. W.A.
(Winkie) Wilkins.
"To assist in that endeavor with Walgreen's and with the aid of Winkie
Wilkins, we are appealing to DOT to put a stoplight at that intersection,"
Barlow said. "Hopefully, we'll wind up with a stoplight there and a
Walgreen's."
The lack of a traffic signal at the intersection has resulted in 25 wrecks
during the past two years.
The roadway is the most heavily trafficked thoroughfare in the City of
Roxboro, according to the Roxboro Police Department. The road has a daily
traffic count of 23,000 vehicles.
County commissioners adopted a resolution on Aug. 1 requesting the DOT to
install traffic controls at the intersection.
The state DOT will make the ultimate decision whether to install a traffic
light at the intersection since it has responsibility for maintenance and
traffic control devices on U.S. 501 and Madison Boulevard through the city.
