| North American Aerodynamics partners with SCSEP to offer work training program for seniors | ||||
| Low-income senior citizens will soon have the chance to participate in a work experience training program at Roxboro’s North American Aerodynamics, Inc. (NAA), located on Carver Drive. The company is partnering with the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), which is affiliated with the National Caucus and Center on Black Aged (NCBA). Representatives from the national SCSEP office in Washington, D.C., as well as the Raleigh and Roxboro offices were present at the plant today to discuss the new partnership and tour the facilities. SCSEP is a non-profit group, funded under Title V of the Older Americans Act and administered through the Department of Labor, that provides work experience training for low-income persons over the age of 55. SCSEP Director Debra Carter said that the program has worked with different types of agencies, such as private non-profits, state and local federal government agencies and faith-based organizations that train selected seniors in new skills or honing old skills. After the training period, SCSEP tries to negotiate hires for its participants. “We were knocking on the doors of places all over the United States and asking, ‘please hire our seniors,’” said Carter, and that’s how they met NAA’s General Manager Jim Barker. Barker said that after learning of SCSEP’s request he thought it sounded like a “smart idea” and agreed to host at least 100 trainees. He added, “It will give us a good source of what I hope will be good applicants and good employees.” Through the on-the-job experience program, SCSEP receives federal funding that allows them to reimburse partner agencies for the training dollars paid to participants, either in full or half, depending on the length of the training period. “It was just an amazing and admirable thing that he’s done,” said Carter of Barker’s willingness to partner with SCSEP, “and we’re just very very thrilled.” Carter said that the hope is NAA will decide to hire trainees after the training period is over. |
